Acne Therapy

Often triggered by changes in hormones and stress levels, acne is not only unattractive, it can also be very embarrassing. Unlike an occasional bad hair day, acne is difficult to camouflage and has the ability to create not only physical scars, but emotional ones as well.

In the past, there were very few options for those suffering from acne. Traditional treatment included topical washes, drying lotions and oral antibiotics. Unfortunately, these things typically dehydrated the skin's surface so severely that it retaliated by producing more oil and thus, more breakouts. Additionally, conventional wisdom has taught us that the overuse of antibiotics carries its own set of problems, and they should be used only when extremely necessary.

Luckily, there is are alternative acne treatments that are not only extremely effective but also safe. At Physicians Skin Institute, our licensed aestheticians and certified laser technicians know how to treat acne. One way is with the use a light therapy system, which employs a broad spectrum of light to attack acne in two ways: its shorter wavelength clears up current acne, while its longer wavelength penetrates into the overactive sebaceous or oil-producing glands, slowing down oil production and preventing future acne. Other extremely effective methods of treating acne include chemical peels and Levulan Photodynamic Therapy. When used with other procedures such as light-based therapy, results are powerfully enhanced.

Some commonly asked questions

How does light therapy work?

The light therapy system uses a broad spectrum of light to target surface bacteria as well as overactive oil glands. In only a few sessions, you can see dramatic results.

How many sessions will it take?

Each client is unique. While some clients may see some results after only one or two sessions, others may need as many as eight treatments to achieve the results they desire. Talk to one of our licensed aestheticians and certified laser technicians to determine how many treatments you will need to look your absolute best.

Am I a good candidate for light-based acne therapy?

If you are tired of the vicious cycle of oily/dry/erupted skin and the insecurities that come with it, then you are an excellent candidate for light-based acne therapy! Our patients include all age groups, from pre-teenagers to young grandparents.

Is light-based acne therapy painful?

Not at all. This procedure is non-invasive and pain-free. Some patients even find it relaxing, as they lie comfortably on a table for ten to fifteen minutes while the light is applied to the affected areas.

Will light-based acne therapy irritate the skin?

No. Clients can return to their normal activities immediately following treatment.

Is the treatment completely safe?

Light-based acne therapy is a safe and effective treatment for mild to moderate acne. As opposed to oral antibiotics, light-based acne therapy offers faster resolution and fewer side effects. Will other methods of acne treatment be used in conjunction with light-based acne therapy? At Physicians Skin Institute, we deliver the very best in customized skincare to our valuable clients.
